Artwalk Sneak Peek

While we are far from opening our doors for a Grand Opening Celebration (more on that later) we will be offering a little sneak peek of the space during Artwalk next Wednesday, July 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. Stop by and visit us, see what's to come and purchase a Courageous Pathfinder shopping pass! Ever since Anomaly closed its doors back in 2011, I knew I wasn't done as a shop owner.

I continued to grow my accessories collection, learned to screen print and continued to push and evolve as an artist. Then, I met Varick. That dude never stops concepting or creating. Whether it's designing for full-time clients, making insane illustrations for freelace jobs or helping organizations with their branding and marketing needs, he's a badass. Long before we ever became a package deal though, we were both doing things to push Jacksonville forward. Then, as we got closer, I knew I met someone who would challenge me as much as I challenged him. We dreamt about how awesome it would be to do a shop together practically since we started dating. We would each bring our creative assets to the table and see what a melding of the minds could develop. This city inspires us to create more to make a better city, which then makes the city better. It's cyclical.

Last fall when the opportunity arose to open a pop-up (temporary) shop in Brooklyn Station, Varick and I jumped at the chance to try out Wolf & Cub in a brick and mortar location. The response was awesome and we had a blast carrying all kinds of cool stuff made by some super talented Jacksonville makers! We loved the opportunity to be in that space but knew it wasn't the right location for us. So, after the pop-up wrapped up in February, we didn't really know what was next. We were both committed to our full time jobs and knew that when the time was right, the opportunity would present itself.

Well now, with our forces combined, that opportunity HAS NOW PRESENTED ITSELF! We are so so so excited to announce that Wolf & Cub has found a home at the Historic Elks Building in Downtown Jacksonville! We chose Downtown JAX because it's exciting times for the urban core but one thing is missing... great retail! Where can you go to pick up a last minute gift or a last minute outfit right in the heart of Downtown Jacksonville? Wolf & Cub will be that place—a unique marketplace stocking everything from designer denim to finely curated art and screen printed posters (locally designed and printed, of course!) to fresh flowers and letterpress cards. Not only will you find the coolest stuff, but Wolf & Cub will be a creative space to hold workshops for classes, design meet-ups, community conversations, live music, art exhibitions and much more!  

The Wolf is my spirit animal and it gives me an appetite for freedom and living life powerfully, guided by instincts. When a wolf manifests its presence as a guide in your life, it could be a call to live your life more freely, to bring the intensity of passion in your everyday endeavors. As I'm sitting here writing this, it's a grey Sunday morning and I've just woken up to my first day of working for myself again. It's absolutely freeing (although bittersweet because I will miss my Cummer crew so much) and the bottom line is... life it too short. Do what you love. We're about to. Get ready for Wolf & Cub!

Perceptions

The crew over at TigerLily Media put together this incredible video that really sums up why we do what we do at Wolf & Cub. It's about the experience. It's the provenance behind a piece of clothing. What's it's story? Who wore it? Why did it make that person feel good? How did it end up where it is today and where will it travel in the future? Everything has a story. 

Working for the weekend.

When we made the "big announcement" that Wolf & Cub brick and mortar was a reality on Facebook, someone (who knows me and my past business ventures) said "Can't keep a true entrepreneur down." and man, that is the truth. There is something so rewarding for me about putting everything I've got into something I know is mine. I've taken two years off from the grind of owning a business (even though I never reallllly stopped because that entire time I was happily working on building Wolf & Cub). It wears on you. It's been good for me to step back and reconnect with other parts of my life instead of focusing on a business. I've had a nice little break from it all but I am beyond ready to make another go of it. I know the next few months aren't going to be easy. It's going to be late nights and early mornings all while Varick and I continue working at our full time jobs. But it's going to be good and refreshing and rewarding and energizing.

So- here I am this Sunday morning, I've been up since 6:30 a.m. and it feels good. I woke up and immediately started rattling off the todo list in my head. (Check out the artist application that went live this morning!) There's a purpose for me getting up and wanting to work hard beyond the grind of the 8 to 5 workday. We are off soon to do some pickin' and then head to the shop with the goal of finishing the painting of the walls completely today. 

Here we go.

 Varick and I are opening a Pop-Up Shop at Brooklyn Station in Jacksonville! It all happened very quickly which makes it that much more awesome.  We've been in the planning stages for the past few weeks, but before we were approached by Regency Centers, we weren't really thinking about the idea of a store being such a reality so soon. Ever since my last store closed, I've always hoped to open another one at some point. Varick and I have been talking about it for the past couple years but were not actively seeking out a space. The opportunity to open now has presented itself and we're running with it. What have we got to lose? 

And now, here we are. We signed the lease on a store front for a Pop-Up space today! We will be there at least till the end of January 2016, with the option of staying until the end of April. We signed the lease at 2 p.m. By 4 p.m. I'd already unloaded the furniture from my car and made one trip to pick up pallets and drop them back off at the shop. By 6 p.m. we already had a cart full of supplies ready to purchase at Lowes. It's been a whirlwind today. 

o- what's this shop going to be all about? Wolf & Cub will be a finely curated space of thoughtfully designed goods. From clothing and accessories to beautifully constructed vintage pieces and lifestyle goods, we can't wait to showcase amazing local and national independent design in Jacksonville!

To Wear or Not to Wear: Denim Cutoffs

When I read this article on Vogue Magazine's blog talking about when you are too old for cutoffs.  The author writes that she is a mom and wonders if she (in her 30's - which is NOT OLD PEOPLE) can pull them off. For one split second I was second guessing the ratty denim in my own closet, but I quickly snapped back to reality and remembered WHO THE HELL CARES? I'm of the opinion (and always have been) that ones style is ones own. If you can pull it off then go for it! Now, that being said, it's unfortunate that some who follow the "I'll wear what I want." mantra also don't have any style, as that is when the combination gets bad.  So, am I saying that if you've got your own, cool and unique style then rock those cutoffs all day long?  Yes, yes I am.
